Dr. Charles Huang is a global business leader with an exceptional career in investment banking and corporate strategy management. In 2017, Dr. Huang founded Pasaca Capital Inc. and Innova Strategies Ltd. to help corporations maximize the value of their assets.
As a first-generation China equity analyst, Dr. Huang joined James Capel Asia (renamed to HSBC Securities) as China investment analyst in 1994 and his research covered Chinese companies in a wide range of industries. He joined top-ranked China researchers as a senior analyst at Credit Lyonnais Securities Asia (CLSA) in 1996 and became a CLSA shareholder in less than six months. Dr. Huang not only was the most productive analyst on the team but also mentored younger generations of analysts and served as the quality controller for all China research publications. His unrivalled ability to move share price performances of companies under his coverage resulted in many investment banking deals for CLSA. He played a pivotal role in elevating Credit Lyonnais Securities Asia (CLSA)’s China Research business to its apex of number one in Asia during his time with the bank.
As a top global market analyst, Dr. Huang made equity market strategy calls with unmatched precision while at BNP Paribas. In Nov 2007 amid market euphoria, Dr. Huang predicted the eminent market crashes of Hong Kong and China A share markets near their peaks and continued with bear calls through their spectacular descents, but also reversed into outright bull calls precisely at the bottom of Hong Kong market. His March 2009 call of H share fair value range of 9,000 to 12,000 points remains valid through today.
In addition to direct participation in over two dozen IPOs and secondary offerings while at different investment banks, Dr. Huang also raised funds in his own personal capacity for the first wave of China’s private companies going public in Hong Kong.
Dr. Huang also has extensive experience in corporate strategy management. He played a key role in the strategic alliance between China’s Brilliance Group and MG Rover Group in the UK in 2002 and later co-founded Pan-Asia Environmental Technologies, which became a successful public company in December 2007 amid difficult market conditions.
Dr. Huang earned both his Ph.D. in Economics and an MBA from the University of Strathclyde, Scotland. He received his Bachelor’s in Economics from Wuhan University, China.
Erwin Sanft is the Managing Director of Pasaca Capital Inc. and co-founded Innova Strategies Ltd. In 2017.
Erwin is the Managing Director of Pasaca Capital Inc. and a Chartered Financial Analyst charter holder. Erwin has two decades of experience in equity research, which cumulated into vast knowledge of various industries. Erwin was a ranked analyst and his seminal report “the Power of One” put a systemic analytic framework to quantify the impact of China’s One Child Generation on the country’s consumer market and broad economy in 2005.
Before joining Pasaca, Erwin was the Head of China Strategy at Macquarie Securities Group for two years. Prior to that, Erwin managed the Asia and China equity research divisions at Standard Chartered PLC and BNP for over ten years. He also led the China and Hong Kong equity research team as an Equity Analyst at CLSA Asia-Pacific Markets, Research Division.
Erwin holds degrees in Finance and Economics from the University of Auckland and has studied in Nanjing on the China-New Zealand Exchange program.
Darren Marino is an accomplished Corporate Development and Finance executive with expertise in building and managing teams which have been successful in executing global transactions, encompassing M&A, strategic investments, joint ventures, and divestitures. Experience spans public, private, cross-border, and investment led rounds, as well as complex structures – earn‑out, spin‑in. Responsible for over 50 transactions valued at $3+ billion, resulting in over $1 billion in annual global revenue.
Mr. Marino is a Founding Partner and Chief Financial Officer of NextHome Alliance, a boutique real estate venture offering brokerage, title, and mortgage services, leveraging analytics, brand, and unique model. Before that, he was Chief Financial Officer & Senior Vice President, Corporate Development, EnerBlu, an advanced battery and energy storage solutions company.
In 2014, Mr. Marino joined as Partner, Corporate Development, DayBlink Consulting, a provider of strategy and execution advisory services. He was chartered to build their Corporate Development practice and provide leadership in strategic initiatives, such as forming a ventures operation. In 2013, Mr. Marino co-founded EquiRise Partners, a business consulting and advisory practice assisting technology startups and businesses poised for growth.
Before that, Darren was an officer and Vice President, Corporate Development, for Motorola Mobility, responsible for directing mergers, acquisitions, and divestitures, as well as strategic investments and serving on a number of boards – Benu Video, Broadband Innovations, Digital ADCO, Digital Latin America (DLA), and Music Choice. Mr. Marino joined Motorola in 2002 through their acquisition of General Instrument.
At General Instrument, he was promoted to Vice President, Business Development after serving as Senior Director, International Finance. He led the transactions team focused on broadband infrastructure, CPE, and video technology, with emphasis on international growth. Prior to joining General Instrument, Mr. Marino was Director, Financial Planning & Analysis at Sony Music Entertainment, formerly CBS Records. Darren earned a B.S. in Commerce & Engineering from Drexel University and an M.B.A. from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business.
He is currently an Adjunct Professor at Drexel University’s LeBow School of Business, teaching Directed Study in Entrepreneurship through experiential learning courses – Introduction to Entrepreneurship, Corporate Venturing, and Business Consulting.
Daniel Elliott is a recognized engineer as well as a leader in business strategy and business development with specific and deep expertise in the sustainable energy sector. He has worked globally identifying and profitably commercializing advanced and leading-edge technologies in meaningful ways. Daniel has led corporate M&A transactions, secured several hundred million dollars in capital, performed technology validation, constructed lithium battery manufacturing plants, developed successful strategic partnerships and other key activities associated with business value growth. Prior to Pasaca, Daniel served as the CEO to several companies including Microvast, a high-power advanced lithium battery manufacturer, for which Daniel led the growth from roughly 50 to over 1,100 employees and the production capacity increased from lab scale to 2GWh by constructing and commissioning the Phase-1 battery plant in China.
Daniel also advised President George W. Bush on renewable energy for transportation when he was the CEO of Phoenix Motorcars, a leading electric SUV manufacturing company identified by Fast Company Magazine as No. 3 in the “Fast 50” for 2008. He has also won “Energy Innovators Award” from the US Dept of Energy for his work in flash charging and high C rate battery technology commercialization.
Mr. Elliott maintains deep business relationships in North America, Asia and the Middle East.
Michelle has 16 years of experience in the financial industry. She joined Pasaca Capital as a partner in 2017. Prior to Pasaca, she was the founder and CEO for an assets management firm and a securities services firm, advising on securities, facilitating asset management application and dealing in securities from Securities and Futures Commission. Before that, Michelle managed institutional and high-net-worth individual clients’ at Haitong International Securities. Michelle also worked for Standard Chartered Bank, BNP, Credit Suisse and CLSA in varies institutional sales roles earlier in her career.
James has over 30 years of experience in international business, government and public affairs, and corporate management. He has extensive experience working in partnership with several multinational companies, especially in telecommunications, advanced manufacturing, and high technology.
James has unique insights in business and investment, and the courage to break through and innovate in it. In his rich life experience, he has participated in person at the many milestone events after China’s reform and opening up, including various significant commercial and technology negotiations with companies including Fujitsu, Philips, NEC, and Siemens. He led the team to introduce China’s first 10-thousand program-controlled telephone systems and facilitated its nationwide promotion, which is a leading symbolic event that China’s telecommunications industry has opened up and taken a leap-forward in the development era. James also led his team to introduce the fiber optic cable to China from AT&T.
In recent years, James has founded Evergrande Investment and Silk Road Asset Management to bridge the technical and financial cooperation between Chinese companies and foreign institutions.
Goran has been a Partner of Pasaca Capital Inc. since 2017. Before Pasaca, Goran had more than ten years of experience in strategic consulting. The industries of his clients span from IT, automotive, entertainment, new energy, clean-tech, transportation and logistics. Goran also served as producer and executive producer roles for events and projects tied to space and space exploration and he worked closely with the European Commission, Russian space agency and European space agency.
Goran heads the Europe region for Pasaca Capital where he builds value by identifying opportunities in Europe that can be brought into Asia and other expanding economic regions for the significant benefit of shareholders and investor returns.
Robert is an attorney licensed in California and Texas with a background in assisting public and private start-ups, developmental stage, and operating companies with all facets of corporate development, including in-house general counsel work, corporate governance, business management, corporate oversight, corporate strategy, public company compliance, and investor relations.
Robert has considerable transactional experience in a wide array of corporate environments and industries and, aside from diligent draftsmanship and authoring transactions, has also played a critical role in several successful merger transactions, including numerous domestic reverse mergers and international roll-ups, and has orchestrated and creatively modeled a number of significant acquisition opportunities, including the acquisition of a private equity firm in Holland, a German battery manufacturer, licensing, strategic partnerships, and other business opportunities in Europe, Asia, the Middle East, and South America, together with countless domestic business arrangements.
In his expansive 15-year legal career, Robert has managed capital raises in excess of several millions of dollars of investment monies through multiple sources of funds, including high net worth individual investments, family office investments, venture opportunities, and private equity financings. He has been appointed and served as Chief Restructuring Officer in a Chapter 11 bankruptcy restructuring where he single-handedly oversaw the business, transactional, financial, and restructuring operations of an established multinational corporation. He also has extensive litigation management experience and has successfully and favorably negotiated high stakes conflict resolutions in jurisdictions all over the world.
Aside from his extensive legal experience, Robert brings a sound business mindset of mitigating liability and costs while maximizing profit and return on investment. His knowledge base, know-how, and practical approach make him a rare commodity among his peers.
